I began my work as president a decade before 9/11. We had never heard of al-Qaeda. It was prior to the Monica Lewinsky affair. The assault on the traditional family was still emerging. Gay rights were a fringe subject. The full impact of postmodern thinking had not yet been felt. As I look back across that landscape of change, how thankful I am that each year, before our graduates walked the campus for the last time, I was able to remind them of a higher purpose and a higher calling. Each spring, I had one last opportunity to assure them that God was the same, yesterday, today, and forever and that they could therefore embrace their unfolding futures with hope and assurance.

Picture a great naval ship anchored firmly in port. Suddenly a sealed envelope is delivered to the captain on the bridge of the ship. On the outside of the envelope are a departure time, a designated speed, and a set of coordinates of latitude and longitude. The ship begins to come alive as shore leaves are canceled and all supplies are readied. The destination is unknown, but at the designated time, the great mooring hawsers are released and the ship slips out of port into the open sea. It is not until it has gone a great distance—not until the ship has reached the designated spot in midocean—that the seal is broken and the letter is opened revealing the final destination.

You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word” (119:112, 114). “[May] the LORD bless you and keep you; [may] the LORD make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; [and may] the LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace” (Num. 6:24-26, NKJV). Prayer Lord Jesus, we give you thanks for these young men and women. We praise you for your faithfulness. Bless them tonight and tomorrow and in the days to come. May none of these be lost to the kingdom of God. We thank you for the loyal families who have loved and supported them in their quest.
